Body Care Routine for Indian Skin and Weather
A simple body care routine for Indian skin: cleansing, exfoliating, hair removal, moisturising and sun protection — adjusted for humid summers and dry winters.
A simple body care routine for Indian skin has five steps: cleanse gently, exfoliate once or twice a week, remove hair on your own schedule, moisturise every day straight after a shower, and protect exposed skin from the sun. Adjust textures with the season — lighter in humid months, richer in dry winters.
Step 1: How should you cleanse your body?
Use a gentle body wash and lukewarm water. Very hot showers feel good but strip the skin's natural oils, which is why skin often feels tight and itchy afterwards. In hot, humid weather, shower after workouts or long, sweaty days so sweat doesn't sit on the skin — especially on the back and chest.
Step 2: How often should you exfoliate?
Once or twice a week is enough. A mild scrub or an exfoliating mitt removes dead skin, helps moisturiser work better, and keeps skin smoother. Don't exfoliate on the same day you wax, or on sunburnt or irritated skin.
Step 3: How does hair removal fit into a body care routine?
Shaving is quick but stubble returns in a day or two. Waxing removes hair from the root, so skin stays smooth for weeks — see our guide on how to use body wax at home. Whichever method you choose, exfoliate the day before and moisturise once any redness has settled.
Step 4: When should you moisturise?
Every day, straight after a shower, while skin is still slightly damp — that is when moisturiser helps most. Pay extra attention to the driest areas: elbows, knees, shins and heels. A fast-absorbing lotion such as Velvet Touch Body Lotion hydrates without feeling sticky in humid weather.
Step 5: Do you need sunscreen on your body?
Yes, on any skin the sun reaches. Strong sun is the main reason for uneven tone and tanning on the arms, hands, neck and feet. Use a broad-spectrum sunscreen of SPF 30 or higher on exposed areas and reapply when you're outdoors for long. If you already have a tan, our guide on how to remove body tan explains what helps.
How should you change your routine with the seasons?
- Summer and monsoon: choose lighter lotions, shower after sweating, keep skin folds dry, and wear breathable cotton.
- Winter: take shorter, cooler showers, moisturise twice a day if skin feels tight, and give extra care to heels and elbows.
- Air-conditioned days: AC dries the air and your skin with it — keep moisturising even when it isn't cold outside.
When should you see a doctor about your skin?
See a dermatologist if you have persistent itching, a rash that spreads, dark patches that don't fade, or any mole that changes. A body care routine keeps healthy skin comfortable; it isn't a treatment for skin conditions.
